The POM stem in a PA66 top and P2 bottom housing is the unusual part: the molds are tuned for texture rather than maximum smoothness, so you feel a fine graininess as the stem travels. It is not scratch in the defective sense; it is an intentional surface character. Wobble is low and the factory lube keeps things from feeling harsh. Sound-wise, the PA66 top and firm bottom-out produce a high-pitched, clacky voice with a rounded edge, so it reads lively without turning shrill.

Tuning

Lanikai is good stock, but how you tune depends on whether you like the grain. Leave it alone to keep the textured character. If you want it smoother, a thin 205g0 on the rails will knock down some of the graininess, though doing so works against the switch’s whole point, so go light. The factory lube is already sensible. Films are optional given the tight housing. The most restrained tuning here is minimal: build it, type on it, and decide whether the texture is a feature or a bug for you.

Verdict

Buy Lanikai if you want a clacky linear with genuine travel character rather than a generic smooth glide. It stands apart from HMX’s polished options. If you would rather have that glassy-smooth feel, look at HMX Macchiato or the 80Retros x KD200 instead. Lanikai is for the player who wants to feel the keystroke as much as hear it.
