How it sounds
clackyFrequently asked
Is the HMX Retro J a strong or subtle tactile?
It's a pronounced tactile. The bump hits almost immediately at the top of the keypress with little wasted pre-travel before it, so you feel a sharp, clearly defined "D-bump" rather than a gentle rounded one.
How heavy is the HMX Retro J?
It actuates around 36g and bottoms out near 55g, with a short total travel of roughly 3.0mm. That makes it light to engage but with enough bottom-out weight to feel deliberate.
Does the Retro J need lubing?
It ships factory lubed and feels good stock, so most people can use it as-is. Films aren't necessary; if anything, you might lightly lube springs to quiet any faint ping, but the housing is already smooth.
