The POM stem in a PC top and PA66 bottom housing tunes the acoustics toward the high end: clacky, high-pitched, sharp and loud, with a bright top-out and a crisp bottom. Compared to the Retro C’s fuller, fiberglass-reinforced richness, the Retro R trades body for treble. Factory lube keeps the travel smooth with little scratch to speak of, and the KOS single-stage extended spring gives a snappy, consistent return. Wobble is well controlled in line with HMX’s tight molds.

Tuning

It is good to go stock: the factory application is clean and the housing fit is tight. Given how bright the Retro R already is, most tuning effort should go toward taming volume rather than chasing it: thicker keycaps or case foam will soften the sharp top-out if it’s fatiguing. Films aren’t needed; a heavier spring is the only feel change worth considering.

Verdict

Pick the Retro R if you want the brightest, sharpest voice in HMX’s Retro linear lineup with a smooth, light stroke underneath. It is the high-treble counterpart to the richer Retro C and the deeper, rounder Retro T: same chassis, three different sound targets. Skip it if sharp and loud isn’t your thing; the Retro T is the calmer, deeper option in the same family.
