Specs and Feel

This is a true tactile, just a light and rounded one. Actuation sits around 40g with a 52g bottom-out, over 2.0mm of pre-travel and 3.5mm of total travel, so the press is quick to register but still has a reasonable jump up to the floor. The P-shaped bump is small and smooth rather than sharp. You feel it clearly, but it doesn’t dominate the keystroke. The POM stem runs in a polycarbonate top and PA-2 bottom housing, a pairing that leans the sound brighter and cleaner than an all-nylon tactile, with a slightly clacky character on bottom-out. The 22mm single-stage Korean spring keeps the return brisk, and stem wobble is well controlled. Note that HMX doesn’t advertise factory lube on this one, so expect a hint more raw character through the stroke than on their lubed tactiles.

Tuning

Because lube isn’t called out from the factory, the Yamatake is the most obvious candidate in this batch for a light hand-lube pass. A thin coat on the stem rails and a touch of grease on the spring will smooth the travel and kill any faint ping. The small bump tolerates lube well since there’s not much tactility to dampen. Films are optional given the housing fit.

Verdict

Buy the Yamatake if you want a light, low-effort tactile with a gentle P-bump and a brighter sound. It’s a softer, more approachable feel than HMX’s heavier mid-weight tactiles like the Ice Lotus or Valerian, and the light spring suits long typing sessions. Skip it if you want a strong, sharp bump or a guaranteed-smooth stock stroke. For the former, look to the HMX Retro J; for the latter, a factory-lubed tactile is the safer bet.
