Specs and Feel
You’re looking at 42g of actuation, a 50g bottom-out, a standard 2.0mm pre-travel, and 4.0mm of total travel on a 20mm single-stage spring. The build is what sets the tone: a POK stem running in a PA12 nylon top with a modified nylon bottom housing. POK is a slick, low-friction material that HMX has dialed in, and the result is a remarkably smooth slide with essentially no scratch. The nylon-and-POK combination is also why this thing is so clacky — both materials ring brighter than the muted POM you find in deeper-sounding linears, so each keypress lands with a sharp, satisfying pop. Stem wobble is tight, the factory lube is even, and consistency switch-to-switch is excellent.
Tuning
Run them stock. This is one of those switches where HMX’s factory work is good enough that pulling them apart is a downgrade waiting to happen. If you absolutely must tinker, the only worthwhile move is a touch of spring lube to silence any rare ping, but the springs are already quiet. Adding stem lube risks muddying the clean, clacky sound that’s the whole reason to buy these. Mount them on a hard plate (PC or aluminum) and a stiff case to maximize the pop, or a softer plate if you want to take some edge off.
Verdict
Buy the Macchiato if you want a bright, clacky, effortlessly smooth linear and you don’t want to spend boutique money to get it. It out-sounds and out-smooths most switches at twice the price. Compared to a deeper POM linear like the Kailh Prestige Light, the Macchiato trades warmth for clack and snap. If you like a sharp, lively typing sound, this is one of the best budget linears at the price.
