Actuation sits at roughly 50g on a 1.9mm pre-travel into a full 4mm total travel, with nylon top and bottom housings on a stainless-steel spring. The all-nylon housing is what shapes the sound — nylon absorbs more than polycarbonate, so the Red reads as warm and slightly muted rather than bright or clacky. The full 4mm travel gives it a longer, more traditional stroke than the short-travel speed switches in Kailh’s lineup. Out of the box it is a touch dry and scratchy, as commodity linears tend to be, but the feel is even and the weight is comfortable for both typing and gaming.

Tuning

This is a switch that rewards a tune. It ships dry, so a thin lube on the rails and the spring removes the scratch and turns a serviceable linear into a smooth one. The nylon housing already gives a pleasant warmth, so no housing swap is needed. Films can tighten any top-housing wobble but are optional at this price. Given how cheap the Red is, it is an ideal candidate for practicing lube technique — mess one up and you are out pennies.

Verdict

Buy the Kailh Red if you want a cheap, honest linear for a budget build, a filler set, or modding practice. It is warmer-sounding than a Cherry MX Red thanks to the nylon, and far less expensive than boutique linears while getting most of the way there once lubed. Skip it only if you want short travel or a poppy long-pole sound — for that, look at the Speed Silver or Prestige Voice. As a no-drama workhorse, it is hard to argue with.
