Specs and Feel

The Ashes R2 offers two actuation weights — 42g and 52g — over a 2.0mm pre-travel and a slightly shorter 3.8mm total travel, on a 21mm spring. The stem is a U+ hybrid UPE blend, a low-friction material that’s become a favorite for smoothness, riding in PA+ special nylon top and bottom housings. The combination is the point: UPE on nylon is naturally slick, and with Keygeek’s factory lube there’s essentially no scratch to feel. Keygeek’s R2 revision adds a new top mold to optimize how the housing contacts the stem and a spherical bottom mold specifically shaped to muffle the bottom-out. The result is a clean, rounded sound — softer than a bright nylon clack but not muddy. Stem wobble is well controlled.

Tuning

These don’t need anything. The factory lube is even and the UPE stem is smooth on its own, so you can build with them straight from the bag. If you’re a perfectionist, a light film will tighten housing tolerances marginally and a whisper of spring lube cures any rare ping, but neither is necessary. Avoid heavy stem lube — it would only fight the careful sound-muffling work the molds already do. This is a stock-and-go switch.

Verdict

Buy the Ashes R2 if you want a smooth, muffled linear with a designer’s touch at a budget price, and you like being able to choose your weight. Against a brighter, clackier switch like the HMX YG Macchiato, the Ashes goes the other direction — softer, rounder, more muted. If you want pop and snap, pick the Macchiato; if you want a calm, refined linear that’s effortless to listen to, the Ashes R2 is an excellent value.
