Specs and Feel
You get roughly 45g of actuation force climbing to a 58g bottom-out, over 1.8mm of pre-travel and 3.7mm of total travel on a single-stage 21mm spring. That is a slightly shorter-than-standard total travel, which keeps the typing feel snappy and reduces the mushy “long fall” some heavier linears have. Out of the box smoothness is good — the U4 stem glides cleanly with only faint scratch on a fast press. Stem wobble is well controlled for the price, with a little N/S play that disappears once keycaps go on. The real story is the sound: the UPE stem and PBT bottom dampen the top end and emphasize a rounded, thocky bottom-out rather than a sharp clack. Factory lube is present but conservative, which is the right call at this travel length.
Tuning
Honestly, this one is fine stock for most people, and at this price the point is to buy a lot and just type. If you want to push it, a thin coat of 205g0 on the rails and a dab of spring lube kills the only ping you are likely to hear. Films are unnecessary — housing tolerances are tight enough that a film mostly fights you. Skip heavy stem lube; over-lubing a UPE stem this light just muddies the snappy travel that makes it fun.
Verdict
Buy it if you want a deep, smooth linear for cheap and do not want to spend an afternoon modding. It is one of the better sub-30-cent thocky linears I have used, sitting close to a Gateron Creamy Yellow Pro in character but a touch lighter and deeper. If you specifically want a brighter, clackier signature, look at a U4-stem switch in a nylon-and-PC housing instead — but for a muted, full-sounding board on a budget, the Mirror Lake R2 is a genuinely easy recommendation.
