The NovelKeys Cream is a genuine classic — an all-POM linear that became a cult favorite for its deep, distinctive sound. Out of the box it feels a little scratchy, but that’s part of the legend: these break in (or lube up) into something special. The signature is a dry, thocky tone you won’t get from PC or nylon switches. If you’re willing to put in a bit of work, the Cream rewards you with a sound profile that’s still iconic years later.

Specs and Feel

The defining feature is the construction: POM top housing, POM bottom housing, and POM stem. That single-material build is what gives the Cream both its strengths and its quirks. POM is self-lubricating, so in theory it should be glassy — but the tight all-POM tolerances mean fresh switches often feel scratchy until the surfaces wear in against each other. Once broken in, the slide smooths out considerably. Acoustically, the all-POM housing produces a deep, dry sound with very little high-frequency ring — the “creamy” character the switch is named for. As a linear it has a clean, uninterrupted stroke; the experience is really about the sound and the satisfying way it matures with use.

Tuning

This is one of the few switches where I consider lube near-mandatory rather than optional. A thicker grease — Krytox 205g0 is the classic choice — eliminates the stock scratch immediately instead of waiting through a long break-in, and it deepens the sound further. Lube the rails and pole generously; POM tolerates a heavier hand than most plastics. Films are less necessary since the all-POM housing fits tightly already. If you’d rather not tinker, simply typing on them for a few weeks accomplishes much of the same smoothing naturally.

Verdict

Buy the Cream if you want a piece of mechanical keyboard history with a sound nothing else quite replicates, and you don’t mind lubing them to get there. Stock and unlubed, smoother modern linears like the NovelKeys Silk will please more out of the box. But for that unmistakable deep, dry POM thock — and the satisfaction of breaking them in — the original Cream still earns its reputation.
